Our Take
The NCAA Basketball Tournaments Don’t Need Expansion—They Might Need Contraction
The NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments already include 68 teams—far more than enough to crown a deserving national champion. Expanding the field any further risks diluting the quality of competition and diminishing the value of the regular season.
Let’s be honest: the regular season already feels like a long preamble. If more mediocre teams are rewarded with tournament bids, what’s the incentive for excellence over the course of four months?
We’re already seeing teams with losing conference records make the tournament through brand strength or favorable metrics. Instead of expanding, maybe it’s time to ask whether we should be tightening the field—putting greater emphasis on regular-season performance and making each bid truly earned.
More teams won’t mean more drama. It’ll mean more blowouts, more filler, and fewer reasons to care about January or February. Let’s protect the integrity of the Madness—not stretch it thin.
